August 9 – August 23
Opening Reception Saturday, August 9, 5-7 pm
In conjunction with Digital Drawings at Richard Levy Gallery, Albuquerque
The spector ripps project space will be converted into a cactus hothouse by St. Louis–based artist Andrew Millner with the opening of HOTHOUSE on Saturday, August 9.
This intricate installation consists of 100 feet of life-size drawings creating a multifaceted cactus garden. In Millner’s words, “We do not create outside of nature so much as rearrange the elements extant within it…. Need that divide between nature and technology prove so disquieting? What if, in fact, our experience of trees and flowers could become more intimate, more visually democratic, when mediated by the artificial?”
Millner has spent years “collecting” trees and plants by drawing their contours directly into a computer. Employing technology’s complexity and data, the drawings capture information outside the experience of the human eye or camera. The combination of traditional drawing with the power of new technology brings fresh detail and perspective to Millner’s natural world.

The spector ripps project space, newly named after a generous contribution by Steven Spector and Robert Ripps, emphasizes CCA’s devotion to the creation, presentation, interpretation and dissemination of the work of innovative artists in all media, fostering creativity and uninhibited exploration within the community. This project made possible in part by New Mexico Arts, division of the Department of Cultural Affairs, and the National Endowment for the Arts.
